Our guest today is a key piece in that puzzle. I am so excited to have Stacia Crawford here with me today. And we're gonna be talking all about her specialty which is getting you on TV. Please. You're welcome. I'm so glad that you're here.

Stacia Crawford:

Thank you. I'm excited.

September Smith:

This woman is the founder and the chief strategist for the Stay Ready media. Now when I say her "vast TV experience" as a TV news producer, we're talking - how many years, Stacia?

Unknown:

Yeah, 33 years,

September Smith:

33 years as a major network TV producer. And this positions her to be a skilled communication specialist, a media trainer and a publicity strategist. Stacia provides exceptional media coaching, Speaker training and targeted media outreach our clients in both private and public sectors. So what are some of the other things that you're super good as you bring to the table with your client stays here?

Stacia Crawford:

Well, as like you said, After three decades of television, I have a wealth of experience. And so several other things that I'm really masterful at is coming up with great story ideas, helping people really tap into what is that story that's going to resonate with the media, and then making sure that they're able to communicate that in just the right way, when they're doing television interviews, you never want to do an interview and walk away feeling like you didn't get to say what you can to say.

September Smith:

Yeah, and as we've talked about before, you also know just walk into that interview, not knowing what you're going to say. And exactly, you need to have that strategy in that story already hooked up and station is the one to help you with that. Now, TV that that seems like for a lot of people like a big lead. How do you help people prepare for that?

Stacia Crawford:

Well, that's exactly what I do. I do help people prepare for that. And the way I do that, is because we really have to hone in on what is your message. So when I work with people, a lot of times folks will say, Oh, well, you know, this is my business. I'm an expert at this. I could talk about this all day. I know this, like the back of my hand. But the reality is, when you're doing a television interview, you don't have all day. And so you have to really know how to get to the point, get to the heart of your message, and really be in control of that interview. So that your message does get across and you come to that interview with a mission and a goal. And when you leave, you want to make sure that you have accomplished that. And you can't do that if you are not adequately prepared. Yeah,

September Smith:

that is just foundational to that whole thing. In addition to that, I mean, she just helps you navigate how it is you're going to even get on that TV program and what you're going to do with that stuff later. Now, yeah, you were a TV producer. I mean, just recently, we actually retired from active duty as a TV producer with one of the big three networks and out of Chicago. How would you say you came to the realization that people need help with this?

Stacia Crawford:

Yeah, I knew people needed help with this. Because when I was producing my show, and I would get lots of pitches, and you know, lots of people who wanted to come on the show, and there were always these common mistakes that I would see. And I was spending so much time helping people to undo them. One of the biggest mistakes was that people would always come to television saying, oh, you know, I want you to cover my business, you know, report on my book, it was always about, you know, my thing I want, you know, coverage for my thing. And because I had to spend so much time really digging and finding out what is the value for my audience. I knew people needed help with this. And so that was really kind of the foundation for my business.

September Smith:

Huh, that must have been an interesting moment when you thought from the producer side of things. Absolutely. I need to be not just working to help collaborate this one interview, right these people need help even getting booked.

Stacia Crawford:

Yeah. And even you know, with my job as a producer, you know, was to book those segments. But a lot of the time that I was spending preparing people for the interviews because as a producer, I want the interviewer to be flawless as well. I want it to be good because you know, that's my one job to you know, basically delivering value to my audience, so I don't want you to come on my show and blow it, I want you to knock it out of the park. And so I was spending a lot of time doing that and preparing people for that. And then I realized that if people are coming to my show with the same problems, they're going to show us everywhere with the same problems. And I'm going through my email, and I'm saying pitch after pitch after pitch, and they're just horrible Am I got people need help with this.

September Smith:

And as you say, they were horrible, which doesn't mean that then you help them make it not horrible. They just got rejected,

Stacia Crawford:

they just got rejected, because nobody really has that time. Now, occasionally, I might have been able to kind of dig through and kind of find an idea and say, Okay, your pitch sucked. But can you do this instead. But the reality is, again, that's a lot of work for me as a producer, when I've got an entire show to be worried about,

September Smith:

and I would think it would have had to have been something really juicy that caught your eye, they were very, super lucky that something caught your eye, because that's not going to be the case, oh, maybe they'll see the good stuff, you've got to bring the good stuff. And you hope people do,

Stacia Crawford:

right. And like you said, you got to be super lucky, you don't want to rely on luck. You don't want to rely on luck, you want to go into that, you know, when you've come up with a great idea, and you've written a pitch, you want to go in knowing that you've got a better chance of getting on, then you have of getting rejected. And that wasn't the case with most people, it's like you, there's a 90% chance you're gonna get rejected and maybe a 10% chance you might get chosen. And you know, I knew we had to flip that on its head, because there are incredible stories that need to be told. Yeah. But if you don't know how to tell it,

September Smith:

yes, we've talked about before. All the TV networks out there are looking for content, they are looking for those good stories, but you have to know how to present yourself to people like us days yet, or recently you the producer of these TV shows, so that they immediately see the value in what you're doing. So can you can you can I assume that that special edge that you bring to the client, that benefit they get from working with you is because you're not just assuming or guessing what's necessary. You have worked this for three decades, you know exactly what they need to be bringing

Stacia Crawford:

salutely Absolutely. I know exactly what producers want, because this is what I did for three decades. You know, you have people who say, Oh, well, you know, I'm a PR expert, or I'm a PR strategist. And many of them have never been in a newsroom. They don't really know those conversations that are taking place, you know, in those post production and pre production meetings, really knowing what those producers what those editors are looking for, and how to really package that content in a way that it's juicy and becomes irresistible to them. And you know that? Absolutely, that gives me an edge. Absolutely.

September Smith:

So can you give me a recent example of one of your clients, but that you helped and what the results were?

Stacia Crawford:

Yeah, I mean, so one of my recent ones, how about that where there's, there's so many. But one of my more recent ones was a woman who was really going through some personal challenges in her life. And so she started with two of her friends, they started doing double dutch, which was, you know, like this jump rope that they used to do as kids, yeah, ropes. And they started just doing this and they will go out and they were getting more and more people involved. Well, as I started talking to her, I'm like, this is really a great story, because you're talking about how, you know fitness and friendship and how it's really helped you mental health. And of course, now mental health is a very, you know, it's a it's a very prominent conversation right now. Whereas it used to be a lot of stigma around it. But she was actually able to get, you know, I helped her get on local television, which then we kind of went up to national TV, she ended up with the feature and oh magazine, and now she's been featured in a full fledged documentary. And that's the power of getting your story out there to the people who need to hear it. And she has over 60,000 people now.

September Smith:

How is she leveraging that for her business?

Stacia Crawford:

Well, she's leveraging it because now she's gotten. She's gotten the attention of a major r&b singing group. So they sponsor a lot of her they fly her out, she performed at their concert, and she's in negotiations with a major contact con contract with a major athletic shoe company. Oh,

September Smith:

my God. That's incredible.

Stacia Crawford:

Yes, absolutely.

September Smith:

So just one little example.
